We Are What We Trust
Continuing our look at idols from Psalm 135, we see in Verses 15-17 that idols made by men have mouths, but don’t speak; eyes, but don’t see; ears, but don’t hear; mouths with no breath. Then Verse 18 says,
“Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.”
Just think about being like the things we set up as idols – the things in which we trust.
A person who idolizes another person, will often become like that person. People who idolize their children often act like children. Worshippers of material things take on inanimate hearts. Idolizing power can produce a god-like complex. And, of course, one of the most dangerous – worship of self where we write our own rules causes us to be worthless, not blessing others. Worshipping something other than God causes one to no longer speak, see, or hear truth.
The word for “make” in Psalm 135:18, is the same word for “make” in Genesis 1:26a,
“Then God said,
‘Let us make man in our image,
after our likeness.’”
When God created the heavens and earth, He put things in their proper and orderly groupings. Plants, fish, birds, cattle, etc. When He created man, He revealed His desire that we would be in His grouping. We would never be God, but we would be with Him and like Him – kind, wise, caring, loving, joyful, purposeful, etc. We would be glorifying Him.
Sin changed all of that. When we worship anything other than God, we become futile. But when we are rescued through the blood of Christ, we are set free to humbly worship God and be transformed into His image day by day! We are invited to trust in God, and so become more like Him.
