Spiritual “Musts” from Romans 1

We know that negative focus can bring darkness. Since that’s the bent of the human condition, God has taught us well what to do with our minds. One of many examples is Philippians 4:8,

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true,

whatever is honorable,

whatever is just,

whatever is pure,

whatever is lovely,

whatever is commendable,

if there is any excellence,

if there is anything worthy of praise,

think about these things.”

It’s not that we don’t pray about and deal with the hard things. We lean into Him with thanksgiving, and He will guide us in what to do. Our focus remains on Him.

Romans 1 reveals the danger of a darkened heart. The chapter speaks of those who have exchanged the truth for a lie. The reciprocals of this horrible exchange give us a vital set of “musts” for believers from Romans 1:20-21,

“For his invisible attributes,

namely, his eternal power and divine nature,

have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,

in the things that have been made.

So they are without excuse.

For although they knew God,

they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him,

but they became futile in their thinking,

and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

Here are the four things we’ll look into in upcoming posts: four things we cannot grow casual about:

• We must honor and glorify God as God.

• We must have thankful hearts.

• We must remain obedient and purposeful in our thinking.

• We must keep the light of the truth in our hearts.

These things are impossible apart from loving, abiding in, and trusting in Christ. Lord thank You for being so intimately involved in our lives and our service for You. You keep us safe, cared for, and loved.
