Kayaking VI: We Need Each Other

As I was nearing shore, a wave began to turn me from my straight path. But before it knocked me off course or engulfed me, my brother was able to grab the rope to straighten me out. I stepped safely from the kayak onto the beach. As we continue to use this as a spiritual analogy, the truth is that we need each other!

“Bear one another’s burdens,

and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2

There is no competition in the body of Christ. We are a many membered body working toward the same goal, with Christ as the head. If we’re not watching, and begin to think like the world, we could find ourselves guilty of tearing each other down. If we see a brother or sister about to get walloped by a wave, let’s grab the rope! It’s vital that we build each other up, not in flattery or pretense, but in truth as we genuinely encourage and help each other.

I’m so thankful that we are not journeying alone. There aren’t words to thank God for all those who have grabbed my rope through the years, spiritually speaking.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another

to love and good works,

not neglecting to meet together,

as is the habit of some,

but encouraging one another,

and all the more

as you see the Day drawing near.”

Hebrews 10:24–25
