Kayaking III: Straight Ahead

After I welcomed the opportunity to be coached, my brother told me to be sure to remain pointed straight toward shore. Don’t let the kayak point left or right, but straight ahead. What a spiritual analogy! We have got to keep our focus on the Lord and His wisdom. When we veer from it, we are asking for a sinking.

Moses told the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 5:32–33,

“You shall be careful therefore to do

as the LORD your God has commanded you.

You shall not turn aside

to the right hand or to the left.

You shall walk in all the way

that the LORD your God has commanded you,

that you may live,

and that it may go well with you,

and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.”

Spiritual laws are just as real as physical laws. If a kayak moves straight ahead, it can maneuver the waves. But if it turns to the left or right, the waves will overpower it. When we are moving straight ahead in God’s commands, even in hard circumstances, we will remain spiritually safe. But if we veer in disobedience, we are going to get walloped by the very enemy God was protecting us from as He is always teaching us how to overcome.

“Do not be overcome by evil,

but overcome evil with good.”

Romans 12:21
