Guarding Our Spiritual Identity

I had a recurring dream that my wallet was taken. I woke up both times relieved that my identity hadn’t been stolen. The next day the dreams reminded me to be more watchful. As I zipped and strapped my purse safely in the store buggy, a spiritual analogy hit me.

The Lord wants us zipping and strapping (guarding) our spiritual identity that Satan tries to steal. If our physical identity is stolen, we don’t really cease to be us. We just spend time wrestling with the pain and turmoil it causes. It’s the same with spiritual identity theft. We don’t cease to be who we are in Christ, we just spend time wrestling our way out of the bondage the deception causes.

Galatians 5:1 says,

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free,

and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

So if you are in Christ, here are a few of the many truths to guard:

You are a child of the King of kings. (John 1:12, Revelation 19:16)

You are the righteousness of God in Christ.  Removing sin’s power is why Christ came. (2 Corinthians 5:21, Matthew 1:21)

You are a joint heir with Christ. (Romans 8:17)

You have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16)

You love, because He first loved you. (1 John 4:19)

If that gives you the big head; you’re hearing this incorrectly. If that puts you more in awe of who God is, with thanksgiving for all He’s done for us then you are likely in possession of your spiritual identity in Christ!

“For you have died,

and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

Colossians 3:3
