Getty Up Part V: Spiritual Laziness Prevents True Productivity
Proverbs 26:14 says,
“As a door turns on its hinges,
so does a sluggard on his bed.”
He’s moving, but going nowhere.
There is spiritual door-hinge-turning going on among us today. There’s movement, conferences, high tech effects, but if it’s not obedience to God’s direction empowered by His Spirit, it’s accomplishing nothing.
Sometimes it’s easier to meet, make plans, put on events, and try new things rather than getting still to hear from God and receive His direction. Spiritual laziness can involve a lot of “go, go, go” while neglecting the effort to be still and hear the Lord. It brings about much waste.
Think of our heavenly Father and all He has done for us as you read Proverbs 29:3,
"He who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth."
In what ways might we be squandering the spiritual riches we’ve been given in Christ? In Titus 1:12 Cretans were being accused of being lazy gluttons. Instead of defending them Paul said,
“This testimony is true.
Therefore rebuke them sharply,
that they may be sound in the faith,
not devoting themselves to Jewish myths
and the commands of people
who turn away from the truth.”
Titus 1:13-14
Don’t stay under teaching that is moving away from the truth of the Bible. What if rather than lazily flopping from one thing to the next, we made the time and effort to rest in the the Lord, hear from Him, then rise up to accomplish His will?
Lord, be glorified so that souls may be truly saved, refreshed, and built up. Help us to accomplish Your mighty and victorious will.
Getty up, indeed.
