Getty Up Part IV: Spiritual Laziness Breeds Wrong Thinking

There are many world views out there that are opposed to the wisdom of God. If we are lazy in learning and applying the ways of our Savior, the outcome can range from embarrassing to spiritually deadly. Proverbs 26:16 says,

“The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes

than seven men who can answer sensibly.”

I think the lazy man is often the last to realize it.

If we heed Proverbs 22:4, we will diligently walk in humility and fear of the Lord to live a life that God rewards. Yet if we are spiritually lazy, we become wise in our own wisdom as we wreak of the sin of pride. We’ve all been there, and are grateful for repentance when the Lord convicts us. But refusing to be corrected by God’s Word can bring a deadly scenario.

For those who are lazily following the crowd and feeling proud of their views that oppose God’s wisdom, there is a warning in 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12,

“Therefore God sends them a strong delusion,

so that they may believe what is false,

in order that all may be condemned

who did not believe the truth

but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

They speak as if they are wiser than seven men who can answer sensibly, but are spreading words that leave people in sin. But if we are diligent to hear the wisdom of God through Scripture, we have God’s wisdom to share. His wisdom brings life, joy, and spiritual blessings.

In fighting spiritual laziness, we do well to heed Romans 12:2,

“Do not be conformed to this world,

but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,

what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
