Don’t Move The Bobber

If we’re fishing with a bobber and it moves, we know something is interested in the bait. So we begin to do what we can to make it even more enticing. Spiritually speaking, Satan has his own perverted form of fishing for men. He casts a lie or temptation in hopes of hooking us. If we don’t heed the warning of the Lord, we may move toward it, knocking it around in consideration, rather than resisting. If we move toward it, Satan sees action from the bobber. Rather than flee, he’ll keep the enticement coming until we’re hooked and taken captive.

“But each person is tempted

when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin,

and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

James 1:14-15

Different things entice different people. Some may be tempted by gossip, while others are lured by sexual sin. Some may struggle with self-righteousness, while another seeks the praise of men. Whatever it is, remember there’s a dangerous, piercing hook inside. We want to move away from the enemy’s bait, and toward the joy of the Lord.

"Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,

coming down from the Father of lights,

with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

James 1:17-18

Lord, keep us swimming always toward the light and wonder of You where there is freedom.  Help us to avoid giving attention to those things that promise pleasure, but will land us in darkness, garbage, disappointment, and pain. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who reveals the truth we need to overcome.
