A Wind We Can Trust
“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man,
but men spoke from God
as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit..”
2 Peter 1:21
Oh, to be carried along by the Holy Spirit! I’m not implying we would only be carried into ease and good times. We could potentially be carried into suffering. But to be carried by the Holy Spirit would be to remain in the will and very arms of God.
The verse above reminds me of Ephesians 4:14 where another option is to be “…tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting…” This ride would actually appeal to our flesh, but would take us on a dangerous journey that might begin in temporary pleasure, but would end in devastating loss.
If we use the illustration of a magic carpet carrying us around, we could hop on one that is unholy for a temporary good time and wish we hadn’t. But those who submit their own will to Christ will be carried by One who is pure and holy. He will carry us where we should go. He will empower us to do His will. It might not be the story we would have signed up for, but in eternity we’ll be so glad for the times we didn’t resist, grieve, or quench the Holy Spirit. He desires to carry us for our good, and with the God glorifying effect that comes from a great and mighty wind. We don’t want to be carried by false winds. We want a Wind we can trust.
