When Paralyzed

Matthew 9:2 says,

“And behold,

some people brought to him a paralytic,

lying on a bed.

And when Jesus saw their faith,

he said to the paralytic,

‘Take heart, my son;

your sins are forgiven.’”

Notice what Jesus saw.

You’d think he would see how the man couldn’t move, their ingenuity in lowering him down, etc. He did, but what He saw – the thing that really mattered – was their faith.

In those paralyzing times of our lives, does He see that in us? Does He see us like these people who knew they could do nothing apart from Him? Years ago, the COVID pandemic suddenly paralyzed our way of life and much of the world. But other things can leave us feeling paralyzed, too. A scary diagnosis, a relationship struggle, a job loss, a financial collapse, betrayal, a wayward child, the unknown, fear, loss of a loved one, and the list goes on. In these times we need the heart of 2 Chronicles 20:12b,

“For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us.

We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

That’s faith. Knowing we can’t, but He can. Knowing He cares and has the answer before we ask.

“Before they call I will answer;

while they are yet speaking I will hear.”

Isaiah 65:24

Let’s offer Him our weaknesses, questions, cares, and feelings of paralysis. He welcomes that as a platform to show His great love, strength, and wisdom; to remind us that we are reliant on Him. Our part is to pray, hear, and obey. Sovereign Lord, please lead us in a way that the faith of your people will be seen and glorify Your great name. Nothing is too hard for You.
