Oh Dear, Not A Drop
A bird landed on our bird bath sounding more like yelling than chirping. That’s when I realized the bird bath was dry. I imagine he was annoyed to arrive expecting a place to drink and splash around, only to find not a drop of water. I was glad he let me know, and filled it up.
Since Christ is our Living Water, there are a lot of spiritual analogies we could draw here. When people know we’re believers, they should expect to find the refreshment of Christ in our lives. 2 Timothy 4:2 tells us to be ready in season and out. 1 Peter 3:15 tells us we’re to always be prepared to make a defense, in gentleness and respect, to anyone who asks for a reason for the hope we have. By abiding in Christ, we will be refreshing springs rather than self-absorbed and dry.
In Matthew 21:19, Jesus saw a fig tree from which to get fruit, but it only had leaves. He said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” The tree withered immediately. As believers our very existence is to share the good news; to hear and obey to accomplish God’s plans. Lord, keep us filled and ready!
Individually and in our churches, if we’re offering man-centeredness, entertainment, or anything other than the wonder of Christ, we are robbing people of the refreshment of Living Water. Lord, forgive me for every time I’ve been that dry bird bath, when You have provided such rich and fulfilling abundance for me to share. May we rejoice in and take full advantage of the reality You’ve invited us into:
“Whoever believes in me,
as the Scripture has said,
‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:38
