Never Forget

If you’re old enough to remember where you were during the atrocities of September 11, 2021, then it’s probably hard to believe it happened a quarter of a century ago. One of the statements associated with the tragedy is “Never Forget.” We humans are very prone to forget. We must remember, not in vengeance, but for the sake of those who suffered, and to prevent such a thing from recurring.

I’m reminded today of how often Scripture says, “Don’t forget,” or “Remember.” As believers, we serve our Father’s Kingdom in a spiritual war with an enemy more shrewd and more powerful than we are. But we serve the One who is greater than he and has him on a leash. The enemy can be subtle; a proverbial snake in the grass looking to get a foothold. So we are to remember, watch, obey God’s commands, and be ready. 2 Corinthians 2:11 says,

“…so that we would not be outwitted by Satan;

for we are not ignorant of his designs.”

Satan wants us to forget, just as the enemies of Western Culture would love for America to forget. As Americans we need to tell the lessons of 9/11 to the next generations. And as Christians we need to remember there is an enemy plotting against us, yet…

“…he who is in you

is greater than he who is in the world.”

John 4:4b

May Americans be able to declare the lyrics of “You’re A Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan,

“And forever in peace may you wave.”

And as believers may we remember truth in order to declare 2 Timothy 4:7,

“I have fought the good fight,

I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

May we never forget.
