Lessons from Jeremiah 18: God Is Sovereign

Let’s continue to learn about our God from Jeremiah’s obedient trip to the potter’s house,

“Then the word of the LORD came to me:

‘O house of Israel,

can I not do with you as this potter has done?

declares the LORD.

Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand,

so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.’”

Jeremiah 18:5-6

God is sovereign. He created all that is. Everything is His, and His ways are perfect. Because of our sin nature, we tend to squirm and resist the work of our Potter. But as we grow in the Lord, we find our hearts yielding more and more to His instruction. We know we can trust Him, and He promises He is working all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

“My purpose will stand,

and I will do all that I please.”

Isaiah 46:10

There is no stopping the Lord our God, and that is good news to those who love Him. Yet many still live in rebellion. They resist His kindness that is meant to bring them to repentance. They hate His ways. And so did we before we came to Christ.

Scripture calls those who are disobedient and refuse to bow the knee, stiff-necked. But their resistance will ultimately be futile, because God’s plan cannot be stopped. Isaiah 14:27 says,

“For the Lord Almighty has purposed,

and who can thwart him?

His hand is stretched out,

and who can turn it back?”

The answer, of course, is no one. Lord, make us pliable in your hands to joyfully be a part of all You are doing! Your sovereignty gives us comfort.
