His Name Endures

“Your name, O LORD, endures forever,

your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.”

Psalm 135:13

His name.

There are names that thrill our soul and names that stir up ill feelings. There are names we see on caller ID that are a “hurray,” and others – not so much. But there is a Name above every name and that is the name of Jesus! We would be lost without that name. There would be no rejoicing without that name. We wouldn’t exist without that name!

Our God expounds on His name in various ways. Yahweh, יהוה (Yĕhovah) means self-existent. We see His name as the Lord our healer, the Lord our provider and on and on. One of my favorite moments, is in Exodus 3:13–14 when Moses asked God what He should say to the children of Israel when they would ask the name of the One who sent him. God’s answer was,

“‘I AM WHO I AM.’

And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel:

“I AM has sent me to you.”’”

Jesus said of Himself in John 8:58, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” His name represents who He is. It’s why we seek to know more about this wondrous One we serve. The more we learn about Him, the more thrilled we are at His name. It’s His name that caused David to know that Goliath didn’t stand a chance. His name is where we find strength, joy, and purpose. Words fail us in trying to speak of His name and, praise Him, it will endure. Let’s take full advantage of the truth of Proverbs 18:10,

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower;

the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”
