Getty Up Part II: Spiritual Laziness is Annoying
Physical laziness is awful, but spiritual laziness is worse because it involves things that are eternal and indescribably important. Proverbs 10:26 let’s us know that laziness is annoying and repulsive,
“Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.”
As believers, we are the sent of the Lord to shine His light to those around us. When one sends a lazy person, it will not honor the sender. On the natural level, that’s not good for business. On the spiritual level, that’s not good for anybody.
But look at the difference when we are diligent to be doing things God’s way by staying in the Word and prayer to really get to know Him and hear Him from Proverbs 25:13,
“Like the cold of snow in time of harvest
Is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
For he refreshes the soul of his masters.”
By being faithful to walk in the Lord’s ways, which do not include physical or spiritual laziness, we become vessels of refreshment, rather than vessels of annoyance to God and fellow believers. Our diligence is in focusing on our personal relationship with Him. When we’re lazy with that, we’re like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, I don’t care what “great Christian work” we think we’re doing. And if we’re talking about Christ in the work place while doing a lazy job, that’s not Kingdom building. That’s spiritual laziness.
Lord, help us not to irritate through spiritual laziness, but to imitate You in joy and zeal. Cause us to rely on Your strength, beauty, and power to accomplish what You have planned..
