Getty Up Part I: Are We Dabbling In Spiritual Laziness?
I’ve never been glad I was lazy. Laziness costs us. So think for a minute about spiritual laziness! It’s like playing with fire. It’s not lazy to relax and enjoy a slow paced day. We all need that. But physical laziness is harmful, and spiritual laziness is worse.
Listen to this word to ancient Israel in Deuteronomy 28:1,
“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God,
being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today,
the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.”
What an offer! What an invitation!
Yet how often, rather than diligently obeying His instruction to trust, pray, and praise, do we find ourselves worrying or pouting instead? He tells us not to take into account any wrong we’ve suffered – vengeance is His, He can handle it rightly. Yet we might lazily chew on the bitterness of an old memory or recent hurt, instead of praising Him for being with us and covering it.
We often know the right thing to do, but laziness is easier. It’s also extremely dangerous.
Proverbs 18:9 woke me up like a splash of cold water,
“Whoever is slack in his work
is a brother to him who destroys.”
Whoa. By the power of the Holy Spirit, serving our King with diligence, zeal, and obedience is the only way to live. But spiritual laziness can feel easier. How shocking to see that being slack causes us to partner with the enemy – the great destroyer. Our Father wants the best for us. We’ll be sounding the wake up call against spiritual laziness in the next few messages, diving in to bask in His mercy and grace to find the strength we need to be faithful servants.
