Freedom That Lasts
Not everyone claiming to stand for freedom, is standing for genuine freedom. Some things may feel like freedom at first, but if it is outside of God’s plan, it will not feel like freedom for long. Freedom to sin is somewhat of an oxymoron, because sin will always bring some form of captivity. Sin is a cruel task master luring in with promises of freedom and pleasure, but mocks with reneging. Jesus came to set us free. He ever lives to keep us free.
Look at Jeremiah 34:10,
“And they obeyed, all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant
that everyone would set free his slave, male or female,
so that they would not be enslaved again.
They obeyed and set them free.”
What a day for rejoicing! Yet the reality of the next verse rained heavily on the parade in Jeremiah 34:11.
“But afterward they turned around
and took back the male and female slaves they had set free,
and brought them into subjection as slaves.”
How horrific. That’s what freedom “to” sin, rather than freedom “from” sin looks like. But John 8:36 assures us,
“So if the Son sets you free,
you will be free indeed.”
Why would we bow to another? Through Christ we have the forgiveness of sins, and His teachings keep us in true and eternal freedom. Let’s not allow sin to work its choking way around our necks to become a yoke of bondage. Lord, thank You that You never go back on Your Word. Help us to always serve you with joy and discipline, as freedom fighters who insist on truth and unchanging freedom for ourselves and others.
