Avoiding Futility
It’s so good to find our true purpose and ours is to glorify God. When we desire our strength to be seen, our lives are actually fragile and futile. Isaiah 1:31 says,
“And the strong shall become tinder,
and his work a spark,
and both of them shall burn together,
with none to quench them.”
Our God is a consuming fire. He will ultimately cleanse and bring to an end all things that are evil and futile. But those works that are eternal and glorify God will stand. Are we living to make a name for ourselves? The works that were for self all along will be the spark that lights the whole thing up to end in futility. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 teaches us,
“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.
Now if anyone builds on the foundation
with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—
each one’s work will become manifest,
for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire,
and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives,
he will receive a reward.
If anyone’s work is burned up,
he will suffer loss,
though he himself will be saved,
but only as through fire.”
Wood, hay, and straw don’t reflect light. Yet gold, silver, and precious stones do! Our works should always reflect the light of the Lord, not soak the glory in for ourselves. A successful life is one that glorifies God.
