The Patience Of The Potter
I’m amazed at the patience of God. Rather than cast me aside in my weakness and sin, He corrects me in love and strengthens me, so that I can keep moving forward in Christ. When I think of the patience required for a whole world of souls like me, I am stunned at His nature. Isaiah 64:8 says,
“But now, O LORD, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.”
I think of the work of a potter and picture His hands. I picture me as the clay, and again am reminded of His patience. Any little hard piece mars the work. I realize I allow things in that are not helping the process. Think of sins (such as spiritual laziness, pride, gossip, unthankfulness, envy, self-promotion, and the list goes on) as pieces of rock in the spinning clay. Our Potter is transforming us into the image of Christ! Yet every time I attach myself to something harmful, He helps me remove it through repentance, and He continues the work.
Let’s bask in the wonder of His love and patience, being spurred to quick and joyful obedience from Hebrews 12:1-2,
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
