Journeying in Genesis: The Gift of Fearing God

On the first day of creation, the mystery of the Gospel was proclaimed as light was separated from darkness. Let’s look at day two.

“And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters,

and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

And God made the expanse

and separated the waters that were under the expanse

from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.

And God called the expanse Heaven.

And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

Genesis 1:6-8

This sets up a lesson on the fear of God who created the expanse and controls the water supply. Reverence, yes, but also fearing being in opposition to Him. Proverbs 9:10 tells us that fearing Him is the beginning of wisdom. We cannot truly love and worship God apart from it. We recently read Psalm 36:1,

“Transgression speaks to the wicked

deep in his heart;

there is no fear of God

before his eyes.”

That’s frightening.

In 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 God said,

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Fear of God brings hope, humility, prayer, the right way, and a desire for Him. It acknowledges our desperate need for our next breath and the living water only Christ can give.

Isaiah 33:6b says,

“…the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.”

Creator of heaven and earth, saturate our hearts with truth and fill them with treasure.
