Is It Flowing?
During preflight safety presentations, we hear that in the rare instance that oxygen masks drop, oxygen is still flowing even if the bag doesn’t inflate. I don’t want the masks to have to drop, and I really don’t want to get one that doesn’t inflate.
But it gives us a good spiritual analogy. Sometimes in our walk with the Lord, His presence is so graciously apparent. At other times He seems distant or silent. David said in Psalm 35:22,
“You have seen, O LORD; be not silent!
O Lord, be not far from me!”
Now, un-repented sin will harm our relationship with Him. But if the Holy Spirit is not convicting us of specific sin, then we can’t assume that’s the issue. So what do we do in those times when Living Waters don’t seem to be flowing? We trust Him. We believe His promises.
“…fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10
Oxygen masks on an airplane really do have a continuous flow system and oxygen really is flowing no matter what it looks like. In the same way, once we put our trust in Christ, He never leaves us nor forsakes us. Trusting Him when His presence doesn’t seem as evident can be a time of spiritual growth that battens down some hatches as we walk with Him.
So when do we give up in unbelief when we aren’t sensing His presence like we want to? Never. We don’t walk by feeling, we walk by faith in our God and His Word.
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20
