Indescribable Glory

I watched the movie Oppenheimer recently. The visuals of the atomic blast are stunning. A reaction like this, coming from splitting something as small as atoms, makes me fall more in love with and more in reverential fear of the Creator of such things. In my daily reading, after seeing the movie, I couldn’t help but find awe as I read Ezekiel 1:4 regarding the glory of God,

“Then I looked, and behold,

a whirlwind was coming out of the north,

a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself;

and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber,

out of the midst of the fire.”

Glory!

If you are in Christ, that is Who goes before you, walks with you, and brings up the rear guard. That is Who loves and protects you, empowers you, and through Whom all things that come your way must filter. Oh, Lord, forgive us for allowing our perception of you to be anything less than Who you truly are. You are worthy of all glory and praise.

Not long after I read that verse, I was visiting a church with my kids in Florida, and this quote by Frederick Buechner was in the bulletin:

“We do well not to pray the Lord’s prayer lightly.

It takes guts to pray it at all.

To speak those words is to

invite the tiger out of the cage,

to unleash a power that makes

atomic power look like a warm breeze.”

Let’s meditate on the power, strength, wisdom, and wonder of such a strong, loving, and compassionate King. Let’s not try to imagine Him in an image of our own making, but as He truly is as revealed in His Word. May we stand rightfully in awe.

“Let all the earth fear the LORD;

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.”

Psalm 33:8
