Getty Up Part X: Spiritual Laziness Clutters Our Way

“I’m glad I didn’t put effort into that important thing,” said no one ever. Life is hard enough. We don’t need to contribute to the way being difficult. Can you imagine pouring clutter in the very path you need to run? Spiritual laziness does that. Proverbs 15:19 says,

“The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns,

but the path of the upright is a level highway.”

No one likes being stuck in traffic, but that’s how we live spiritually when we are unwilling to put energy toward our relationship with the Lord; toward obedience to His commands that are only for our good continually. Let’s discipline ourselves to start the day feeding on His Word, and get still in prayer to hear Him. Satan will still throw obstacles our way, but we will have strength to stay the course, and God’s wisdom to maneuver well. Living for the Lord, we’ll be more energized to do those things we need to do at home, school, work, and play. Psalm 119:165 says,

“Great peace have those who love your law;

nothing can make them stumble.”

Life’s busy-ness can be the very thing that fuels spiritual laziness. But putting effort into obeying the Lord in His strength will make for a highway of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control that will not only bless us, but those in our wake. Spiritual laziness will only make us wish we had put some “getty-up” in the things that matter.

“Go through, go through the gates;

prepare the way for the people;

build up, build up the highway;

clear it of stones;

lift up a signal over the peoples.”

Isaiah 62:10
